Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if my drain is blocked?

Before you can unblock a drain, you must first determine the type of blockage. There are three main types:

    1. Fats, oils and grease (FOG)

    2. Food particles

    3. Hair and other fibres/debris

The best way to find out which type your drain is blocked with, is to first pour water into the drain. If it drains away quickly you have a FOG blockage. If it drains slowly, you have food particles stuck in the drainpipe. If your sink gets clogged up after pouring liquids down the drain for a long period of time, then you probably have hair or debris stuck in the drainpipe.

  • How do plumbers unblock drains?

There are several ways to unblock drains, including drain rods and water jetting. A drain rod works its way through the water pipe, pushing through whatever is causing the blockage. Water jetting or high-pressure cleaning is where water is blasted through the pipes to clear anything that is stuck.

  • How can a plumber locate a blockage?

Using modern technology such as a CCTV drain camera, plumbers can accurately and efficiently locate blockages. A remote camera is inserted to the piping system, with the footage being displayed on a computer as it moves along. Once the blockage is found the camera can place a mark so when it comes to relining or clearing, it’s easy to find the blockage again.

  • Is there a way to check if my pipes and sewer lines are in good condition?

Yes. A camera pipe inspection is a great way to check the condition of your entire pipe system. Using a CCTV camera, a plumber will inspect your pipes, checking for damage, deterioration or blockages. They will then compile the footage and provide the client with a detailed outcome report.
